Ditch the DEI Playbook: Time to Think Outside the Box

When we were children, our imaginations were boundless, unconstrained by the limitations of adult logic. The humble blanket could be a comforter, a fort, or even a cape.

As we grow older, however, our minds become increasingly rigid, adhering to established norms and conventions. This cognitive rigidity, known as functional fixedness, can be a significant obstacle to innovation and problem-solving, particularly when looking at implementing effective Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) solutions in the workplace.

What is Functional Fixedness?

Functional fixedness manifests in DEI efforts when we become so accustomed to traditional approaches that we fail to explore alternative solutions. We may rely on the same strategies, metrics, and programs year after year, even when evidence suggests they are ineffective. This can lead to stagnation and missed opportunities to create a truly inclusive workplace.

To overcome functional fixedness and foster a more innovative DEI culture, we must challenge our assumptions and explore new perspectives. Here are three strategies to consider:

Deconstruct the Problem

  • Identify core challenges: Break down complex DEI issues into their fundamental components. For example, instead of focusing on overall employee satisfaction, consider specific elements of the employee life cycle (e.g. onboarding, appraisals, progression and promotion) that, if improved, could improve people's experiences.

  • Question assumptions: Challenge underlying beliefs. Are there hidden biases or stereotypes influencing your approach?

  • Reframe the problem: Look at the issue from different angles. How might a competitor, a customer, or an employee from a different background perceive the issue?

Be Inspired

  • Explore other industries: Look for innovative solutions in unrelated fields.

  • Look at other countries: Learn from cultures with different approaches. How can these insights be applied to your organisation?

  • Benchmark against competitors: Identify best practices within your sector and identify areas for improvement

Welcome Fresh Perspectives

  • Embrace diverse teams: Create cross-functional teams with individuals from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

  • Leverage younger employees: Tap into the creativity and open-mindedness of younger generations.

  • Encourage experimentation: Allow people to try, and fail.

Remember, a blanket is just a blanket until we imagine it to be something more.

And DEI is an unsolvable problem, until it isn't.
